Report a Bias Incident
Tuesday, August 25, 2009
- Make the Call/Document the Incident
- The very first thing you should do is call 911
- Contact your RA/RC — the resident staff in your building will know who to contact in time of crisis.
- Call the Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS): 924-7133. After business hours, a dean on-call can be reached by contacting the University Police non-emergency number at 924-7166 and asking them to have the dean on-call contact you.
- Call the Police Department (434) 924-7166.
- If it is a written slur, do not erase — the police will want to see it for evidence.
- If you have a camera or cell phone camera, take a picture of the incident or license plate.
- Write down what the person said if the abuse is verbal.
- Get Support
- Contact your Peer Advisor
- Ask your friends to support you
- Call Home
- Spread the Word
- Let friends, fellow students, and appropriate organizations know about the incident.
- Write a letter to the editor of the Cavalier Daily.
